A head-start offer to customers who had pre-ordered the game allowed them into the full game on 29 January 2010, ahead of standard retail customers. This was ultimately extended until 26 January 2010, when the final day saw Cryptic stage a Klingon invasion of the Sol system, later interrupted by a full-scale Borg attack on Earth Spacedock, targeting both sides. The open beta stage was originally intended to last from 12 January 2010 through 24 January 2010. On 9 November 2009, the February 2010 release date was announced, with open beta details being released the following week. Star Trek Online entered the closed beta stage on 22 October 2009. The game was rebuilt from scratch as Cryptic had acquired no useful assets from Perpetual aside from several pieces of concept art.

The rise of a new Chancellor, J'mpok, sees the Khitomer Accords torn up, and an aggressive campaign of Klingon expansion underway.
